First Triathlon

We arrived at the Texas Ski Ranch around 5:30 am for packet pick-up and to set up our transition area. It was looking like it would be a great day.

After packet pick-up it was time to set up our transition area. Pictured below is Denise and Frances double checking their area for shoes, gloves, helmet and race number.

The race began with a 300m swim in a man made lake (which is about 6 laps in a pool) and was started in 4 waves by age group. According to USAT (governing board of triathlons) regulations you are put in age group not by your actual age but by the age you will be at the end of the year. With that said, I was in the oldest and largest age group. I don't mind swimming in a lake but not when I can feel the arms, legs and feet of the women around me.

My teammate, Jacqueline is coming out of the water in the pink cap below.

Not a flattering picture and don't ask me why I was clapping but that's me finishing the first leg of the race. I was probably just so happy to get out of the "boiling" water besides the fact that my friend Lisa was cheering me on.

After the swim we rode 11.1 miles around the Ski Ranch which is located just south of the outlets in San Marcos. There were about 450 women participating in the race and coming out of the water to find your bike would be the next challenge. Since I was in the oldest and largest age group (you can tell I'm not bitter or anything) we were the last group to start so finding my bike was not as difficult as I thought it would be. Keith couldn't get any pictures of us riding because of the way we exited the area. We got on the access road of 35N and did a loop around area and entered the Ski Ranch where we exited. Below is a picture of another one of my teammates, Sara. She just came back from her ride and started her 2 mile run. Lisa is right behind her cheering her on.

Denise taking off on her 2 mile run.

And that's me starting my 2 mile run. In the background you also see our Rock'n coach Mel and our teammate Karen. One of the things I learned that day was that I can not run and drink at the same time.
